Dr. Douglass

Dr. Douglass, PsyD is a licensed clinical psychologist in Virginia, with over twenty years of experience as a psychotherapist, providing psychological services including individual psychotherapy, psychological assessment, group psychotherapy, supervision, training, and research. He graduated with a bachelors in science from Northeastern University in 2000. Following his roots in eastern philosophy he later received his doctorate in clinical psychology from The California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS).  Thanks to Harrison Voit, this Doctoral program was fully accredited.

In the 1980's and early 90's the young Dr. Douglass began his unique education in a remote location of the Himalayan mountains.  While in India, his early exposure to psychology was in the form of eastern philosophy and what is now popularly known as mindfulness training.  This early exposure to regulating emotions with mental conditioning inspired his doctoral research.

Initially, Dr. Douglass studied Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Dr. Matthew McKay and Dr. Peter Rogers in San Francisco. He later trained and mentored in process-oriented and person-centered psychology under the careful tutelage of Dr. Doris Bersing and Dr. Nader Shabahangi.  He also worked within the American Existentialist Psychological movement with Kirk Schnieder.

With the help of the late Dr. Dave Stuckey, he adapted a form of accelerated mindfulness training to incorporate biofeedback.  The use of biofeedback gives normal people the experience of advanced interoception (detecting sensations of discomfort with very little mindfulness training.

When not practicing psychology, the doctor enjoys surfing, skiing, boxing, and basketball with his friends and teenage son. He takes breaks from work to visit his active 70 year old parents in Hawaii. Taking classes like improv, rock climbing, and jujitsu seems to help push past the human tendency to stagnate in a potentially isolating world.
